A company that dates back to 1900-1979, Coro jewelry was designed, manufactured, and sold, all across the US, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Fairly common, highly collectible, especially as they have several well known designers throughout the years, like that of Oscar de la Renta.
note: Coro lines were often produced under different names, and manufactured in multiple places... it is relevant to my own research and proximity to Mexico, where many popular lines were created, especially those of sterling silver. These pieces usually had a unique mark, "Coro Made in Mexico" often including traditional numeric references to the metal.
I've found silver to be very uncommon in more modern costume jewelry.
I have several pairs of screwback earrings (1900-1919) that are sterling silver and were originally gold plated
This is called Vermeil.
But more common post WWll jewelry
Is jewellery made with new and usual products, such as plastics and metals.
Here is my own favorite pair of earrings by Coro
The clip-on brackets are made of silver.
They are very much in the style of earrings one would see especially from 1940-50's with a more exaggerated version of this style in the 1980's. However, my research has me stumped.
I adore the old print advertisements, and Coro has so many with such wonderful artwork... Considering work from other lines, such as Vendome costume jewelry (I see a lot of this particular line) there is a large amount of print ads available online.
Trying to get the most accurate date, I stumbled upon this wonderful and very extensive post regarding Coro jewelry, the history and the different logos used in the past 120 years. An amazing post, f you too have some Coro pieces, or are just on the hunt for some amazing pieces, I recommend a quick read of this article by Mark Scoro.
Great resource for this extensive and popular vintage line.
According to the research from the above mentioned article, my own little silver, faux-pearl earrings are stamped with a logo used in 1919, while the catalog and magazine print ads show almost identical pieces at a much later date....
So, the truth is... when it comes to costume jewelry, it's a little bit research, a little bit acquired knowledge, and a little bit of guessing.
Can you tell if these are old or new?
These Coro Pearl Dot earrings had to be repaired. They have brand new backs... Now they have lost their identity but they live on and still look amazing. When it comes to repairing vintage jewelry you should consult a professional if you think they are of value.
Nice read thanks!
