Trucker Hats

□NerdWord□

The mid '60s sees farm owner's, agriculture workers & blue collar employees in trucker hats.

Growing in popularity in the 1970's, these boxy mesh caps were used as a marketing tool.

The marketing departments of big business noted this growing fashion trend.

Notice the move into other types of businesses or groups.

Like a little league team or a social club.. (which was really a drinking club with whist, gin, or bingo.)

Most of these hats were free, used as marketing tools along with match books & ashtrays. Even at a dirty roadside Motel 6...Take it, they want you to steal the ashtray!! It's marketing baby...

Moving into the 1980s we see a rise of branding your clothing on the outside.

popular & more mainstream with cigarettes & beer companies.

Soft drink companies were also a big contributor.

by the mid '80's, product branding brought on a whole new wave of bizarre fashions.

My favorite was the leaving of the price tags on your clothes & ball caps.

A syle that was not too cool at my house... unless it's Johnny Depp, no one wants mom chasing them aroundthe house with scissors.

She still cuts the tags off clothes the second they have been paid for... I wonder why.

1980s Hip Hop inspired style greatly. This solid leather hat had no mesh but is shaped like a trucker hat.

●Popular again in early 2000's, right along with ultra low rise jeans & a thong tall enough to peak out..

Hope that one doesn't come back! I really like my granny panties.

●HOW TO DATE 'EM●

It is likely, that now, even if they are a more modern reproductions of 70s style that they are still vintage.

Vintage is 20 years! PREDATES 2002JESUS, I'm an antique I think... :/

●Look for brittle usually hard tags

Most makers had logos or raised lettering on the plastic snap.

●Look at the metal Brad on inside of the hat. That small metal dot should have a number or name etched into the metal.

●Where it was made

From 1950 to 1980 much of American goods were imported from Korea

There was several companies that mass produced these.

The red Yupoong is Made in Korea. That leaves a big window. Pieced together with; condition, subject matter, and design style, one can make a fair estimation.

●Earlier models of these mesh snapback hats were really boxy.

This blue trucker hat is more likely 1980's with an very slight less boxy & more fitted look

■How to find the real deal■

If you're down to travel & make time to dig at junk stores & thrift shops.. looking in places surrounded (then or now) by farmland increases your chances at finding authentic vintage caps.
